Empowering Women and Girls through Education to Prevent Child Labor and Exploitation
One of the flagship initiatives of CAC-Nepal focuses on promoting education for women and girls as a strategic means to combat child labor and sexual exploitation. Through both formal and informal education programs, CAC-Nepal aims to uphold children’s fundamental rights to education and safety, while also empowering women and girls to break the cycle of poverty and vulnerability.
At present, CAC-Nepal is providing educational support to children attending government schools across the Kathmandu Valley. The program places special emphasis on underprivileged girls, many of whom face multiple barriers to continuing their education. To address these challenges, CAC-Nepal supplies essential educational materials and school uniforms, which significantly ease the financial burden on families. Furthermore, the organization extends financial assistance to help cover other school-related costs, ensuring that economic hardship does not become a barrier to education. This targeted support helps prevent dropout rates and reduces the risk of children being pushed into labor or exploitation.
In addition to supporting school-age children, CAC-Nepal runs non-formal education and literacy programs for women who have not had the opportunity to complete their education. These programs are designed to help women upgrade their literacy and numeracy skills, pursue further education, or even start small businesses. Moreover, recognizing the importance of digital literacy in today’s world, CAC-Nepal incorporates training that enables women to use digital platforms for education, entrepreneurship, communication, and access to services thereby increasing their independence and participation in society.
In 2023, CAC-Nepal also implemented a targeted child labor prevention project in Hetauda Sub-Metropolitan City, in collaboration with the Hetauda local government and the Ministry of Women, Children, and Senior Citizens. This comprehensive initiative involved awareness raising campaigns, child protection interventions, and community-based monitoring. As a result of the concerted efforts by all stakeholders, Hetauda was officially declared a “Child Labor Free City” in 2024; an achievement that reflects the effectiveness of CAC-Nepal’s integrated approach to child protection and education.
Through these education-focused initiatives, CAC-Nepal continues to create transformative opportunities for women and girls, while contributing to the broader goal of eliminating child labor and exploitation in Nepal.
